Crown Principality Status

Requirements

This is not an official SCA web site
Greetings,

A few people have asked what it takes to become a Principality. So after reviewing Corpora and having a few discussions with Callista, I have put together this information. It is formatted with the page number that the original information came from in Corpora (April 2003 revision) and clarification from Callista in parenthesis directly under the Corpora entry.

Corpora Pg. 7
Principality: A principality is a part of a kingdom which has the right to select a reigning Prince and Princess by armored combat. A branch or contiguous group of branches within a kingdom may petition for principality status if the resulting would fulfill the requirements listed below:

At least 100 subscribing members. (Callista has sent a letter to the BoD asking them to review the manner in which they count "members" to include other paid members in individual households instead of just counting Crier subscriptions).

Candidates for all Great Officer positions (seneschal, herald, exchequer, chronicler, A&S, marshall, constable and chatelaine.), each of whom is acceptable to the kingdom officer responsible for the direction of that aspect of Society activity, and such other officers as kingdom law and custom may require.

A name and device registered with the College of Arms. (HRH Steinn and Viscount Vik Vikingsson highly recommends that this be a first priority because it gives an identity to a group. While a Region cannot officially have a name or device, the Kingdom of An Tir can reserve it for us, if it passes the College of Heralds, for the day when we become an officially recognized group).

Consensus favoring advancement in branch status by the members in the proposed principality, demonstrated by procedures acceptable to the Kingdom and Society Seneschals. (For a polling such as this, Callista has advised they want a consensus of approximately 70%).

A record of well-attended events together with regular study or guild meetings, demonstrations, and other educational activities for the benefit of the members and the community at large.

Sufficient members of the orders conferring Patents of Arms to foster the development of those orders and the skills they represent within the principality.

Sufficient fighters of such caliber as to provide appropriate competition for the Coronet.

A body of principality law which provides for the maintenance and succession of the Coronet, and for any other matters delegated or permitted by the parent kingdom. Draft laws, in the form in which they will be presented to the victors of the first Coronet Lists, must accompany a petition for principality status.

Also listed in Corpora are the duties of the Coronet. Some other quick notes, Crown Principality Status is not listed in Corpora, but according to Callista, Crown Principality Status in no different than that of an incipient Shire in that if progress is not made toward the end goal in a reasonable amount of time (being measured in the terms of a couple of years) then the status can be pulled.

Another side note, everything requires a polling, from device and name, approval of governing laws, CP status and finally Principality Status. So, no major decisions can be made without input from us all.

Just a final note, the purpose of this research committee is to answer questions and get the information to all in the hope that when the time comes for specific pollings, decisions are made from an informed standpoint. Hope this helps, but if there are any questions please contact me at:
